What It Actually Takes to Become a Demountable Wall Dealer

The honest landscape, from a manufacturer inside it.
Read the article

Demountable walls are one of the best product lines a furniture dealer, interiors contractor, or independent rep can add: commercial projects, repeat clients, and a category growing at the expense of drywall. But wall manufacturers differ wildly in what they demand from you before you sell your first panel. Having watched dealers navigate this for nearly two decades, here is the honest landscape.

The Software Model

The largest name in the category, DIRTT, routes everything through ICE, its proprietary design and ordering platform. Every wall is specified, priced, and submitted to the factory in ICE, which means a partner staffs ICE trained designers, estimators, and project managers before the first order ships. Software seats, dedicated design staff, and ongoing training are the cost of entry, none of those figures are published, and every one of them comes out of your margin before you sell a wall.

The Branch Model

Falkbuilt sells through Factory Direct Branches: independently owned businesses operating under its banner, with crews trained at the Calgary factory and projects run through its Echo platform. The buy-in terms are not publicly disclosed, and the commitment is closer to a franchise than to adding a product line.

The Full Line Model

The big contract furniture houses, Allsteel and Steelcase among them, sell wall systems through their furniture dealer networks. The catch: to carry the walls, you are generally that manufacturer's furniture dealer first, with everything a full line dealership entails. The channel is also consolidating; HNI's acquisition of Steelcase closed in December 2025, putting two of the largest dealer networks under one parent. In these networks the wall is a side item, and so is the dealer who only wants the wall.

The NxtWall Model

We built our dealer program around a different idea: the factory should absorb the overhead, not the dealer. There is no proprietary software to license and no design department to hire, because our designers produce plan drawings, elevations, and 3D renderings free with every RFQ. There is nothing to stock, because every product is field-fit and ships to the job. There is no furniture line requirement, so NxtWall sits comfortably alongside whatever you already sell.

Training will not cost you either: our installation guides and videos are published free, and field-fit product installs with a single trade, no factory pilgrimage required. Standard lead times run 3 to 5 weeks, and Quick Ship orders leave in as little as 7 days, so your projects keep their schedules.

Questions to Ask Any Wall Manufacturer

Whoever you talk to, including us, get answers to these before you commit: Who produces the drawings, and what does that cost me per project? What software licenses and trained staff must I carry? Do I stock product or warehouse anything? What does installer training cost, and is it required for warranty? What are real lead times this quarter? And do I have to carry your other product lines to sell your walls?

Every model above asks you to fund the manufacturer's overhead before you earn a dollar: their software, their training, their furniture line, their warehouse. Ours asks for a conversation. Request partner access below and sell walls without buying into anything first.
